Heat is absorbed from the ground which is turned into fluid using a mix of water and anti freeze, then the system pumps the fluid into a heat exchanger, which in turn pushes heat into your home.

The length of the ground loop depends on the size of your home and the amount of heat you need. Longer loops can draw more heat from the ground, but need more space to be buried in. If space is limited, a vertical borehole can be drilled instead.

Forty per cent of all of the wind in Europe blows over the UK at some time or another, making the UK an ideal country for domestic wind turbines, usually known as micro-wind turbines. If you have a suitable site exposed to wind, you could easily generate more electricity than you use in your home.

With any electricity you don’t use, you have a choice: it can be stored in batteries for you to use later; or it can exported to the National Grid, in which case you’re eligible for payments under the Government’s Feed-in Tariff (FIT) Scheme.

Turbines come in two types:

Pole-mounted — free-standing, these are suitable for larger properties, especially rural properties and farms, and generate a considerable amount of electricity.

Building-mounted — typically on exposed roofs, these generate smaller amounts of electricity, but are cheaper to install.

A requirement for Solar PV Installations since 1st April 2012

If you’re buying, selling or renting out a property or installing a Solar PV system, you’ll require an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) on your home.

An EPC gives information on how to make your home more energy efficient and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. An EPC records how energy efficient a property is, providing a rating of the energy efficiency and CO2 emissions of a building. An EPC also provides recommendations for further energy efficiencies and cost savings to your home. An EPC is valid for 10 years.

How is it worked out?

Our Domestic Energy Assessors are qualified to inspect any property to assess it for efficiency, to issue certificates and to advise on any improvements — such as fitting loft insulation, double glazing or boiler replacement. As you can see from an Energy Efficiency Rating chart, grades are awarded ranging from ‘A’ at the top for very-energy-efficient, down to ‘G’ for the least energy-efficient home, with the average grade being a ‘D’.

Once we’ve carried out the survey and issued the certificate, it will be lodged in a central database along with a unique identifying number. Access to each EPC held on the database is restricted to the property owner / seller and potential buyers via this unique reference number.
